SHEPHERD CASSEROLE – DINNER RECIPE – a perfect choice to feed a few hungry people at once, with this appetizing and easy dish 🙂



  • 500 g/17½ oz minced pork meat
  • 1 onion
  • 1 carrot
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 250 ml/1 cup tomato passata
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 kg/35 oz potatoes
  • 4 tbsp butter, plus extra for greasing
  • 100 g/3½ oz grated cheese
  • 80 ml/2½ fl oz whipping cream
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • basil
  • hot pepper
  • nutmeg


  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/360°F. Peel and finely dice the onion. Wash, peel and grate the carrot. Finley chop the garlic.
  2. Heat up some oil over medium heat and cook the onion until it turns translucent. Add carrot and garlic and fry for few more minutes, until the carrot gets semi-soft.
  3. Add the meat to the pan, season with salt, pepper, basil and hot pepper for taste, stir everything well and cook for 8-10 minutes. Pour passata to the meat and simmer for 3-4 minutes while stirring.
  4. Boil potatoes to softness in salted water. Add butter, grated cheese and cream, season with salt, pepper and nutmeg, then mash everything into a smooth purée.
  5. Grease a baking dish with butter. On the bottom lay down the meat mixture, then put a layer of purée on top of that. Bake for 40 minutes.
